all of the ins and outs of this research study
Mothers and fathers (in a heterosexual relationship) complete an initial online survey, followed by 14 days of online surveys in the evening before bed. Then, there are follow-up surveys at around 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. These follow-up surveys are only single surveys at each time point; you are not required to complete daily surveys again. This only happens at the beginning of the study. As all of these surveys are online, they can be completed from the comfort of your home and are much more convenient for you than having to come into a research lab at Penn State. All surveys will include items assessing things such as how you are feeling about yourself and your relationship with your partner, time use, media use, parenting experiences, and so forth.
All of the surveys are scheduled at your convenience and based on your schedule. We want to intrude on your normal routine as little as possible. I’ll explain what happens from beginning to end now. Please note that we ask that both you and your partner participate in the study, so each of the steps I am going to explain apply to both you and your partner.
First, you will be given a unique ID number which you will use every time you complete one of the online surveys. You will then complete the initial survey. Before proceeding to the initial survey, you will first view a consent form and indicate that you agree to participate in this research study. The initial survey will ask you about various items concerning your parenting experiences, your relationship with your partner and child, time use, media use, etc.
After completing this initial survey and about 2 weeks later (at the time scheduled with your previously), you will start your 14 daily surveys.
On or before the start of your 1st daily survey, you will receive an email from me with a link which you will click on that evening before bed to go complete your online survey for that day. You will enter your unique ID number and then complete the survey. You and your partner should complete each survey separately without talking to one another about your responses. You will also receive a text message from an automated texting system with a reminder to complete survey each evening. This process will repeat for 14 consecutive days, one right after the other.
We hope that you will be able to complete all 14 days, but we do understand that sometimes things come up and you might have to miss a day. We would ask that you please try not to miss a day though, as it is important to us to understand how your experiences and feelings may change from day-to-day. Surveys must be completed each evening. You will not be able to complete a survey from the previous day. I will also call you a few days into the study to make sure that everything is going ok and to answer any questions you might have.
Within 14 days or so after the daily survey portion of the study, you will complete a follow-up online survey. You will receive an email about this with a link to the online survey.
Then, you will also receive emails from me to complete a follow-up survey at around 3 months and at around 6 months. Generally, you have around two to three weeks to complete each of these follow-up surveys.
